Somerset Council Launches £140m Road Improvement Blitz with Trio of Key Contracts

In a major move to enhance its road network, Somerset Council has signed three pivotal contracts totaling £140 million, ushering in a new era of road maintenance and improvement works within the county. This significant investment in infrastructure reflects the council's commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation system.

Kiely Group, a seasoned contractor with a solid track record in the region since 2008, has been chosen to deliver a comprehensive range of surface-treatment services. Their scope includes road surface dressing, footway crack sealing, ironwork strengthening, and support, along with preparatory drainage, patching, cleaning, and the application of post-surfacing road markings, studs, and high-friction surfacing. The group's extensive experience in handling over 20 million square meters of surface dressing work in Somerset positions them as a reliable partner for this contract.

Heidelberg Materials, another key player in this initiative, will undertake tasks such as carriageway resurfacing and reconstruction, along with preparatory drainage works. Additionally, they will apply post-surfacing road markings, studs, and high-friction surfacing. Their proven expertise in delivering high-quality, lower-carbon, value-for-money schemes aligns well with Somerset Council's sustainability and efficiency goals.

Octavius Infrastructure will focus on delivering highway-improvement schemes and other works. This includes safety schemes, traffic-calming measures, and infrastructure related to active travel, electric vehicles, public transport, and mobility hubs. Their collaborative approach, involving close engagement with Somerset’s team, local stakeholders, communities, and other appointed partners, aims to promote best practice sharing and innovation.

These contracts, spanning four years each, follow Somerset Council's £225 million eight-year road maintenance deal with Kier, signed in October. Kier's involvement encompasses road repairs, drainage, verge cutting, and winter services. The strategic decision to divide the works into four contracts aims to enhance efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and innovation while also focusing on resilience to climate change and reduced carbon output.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s lead member for transport and digital, emphasizes the council's dedication to building resilience against climate change and ensuring a network that is safe, serviceable, and sustainable. The approach is geared towards supporting local economic growth and adapting to financial challenges with a cost-effective, flexible, and innovative service.
