In a fortunate turn of events, a major incident was averted at a construction site in West London. Early on a crisp Friday morning, the unexpected happened: a tower crane's jib at the Central Middlesex Hospital development in Park Royal came crashing down. This alarming incident, occurring at approximately 9:15 am, caused minor damage to a building currently under construction.

Thankfully, the site was unoccupied at the time, preventing any injuries. Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, emergency services evacuated 10 individuals from a nearby building. The London Fire Brigade, promptly alerted to the situation, was joined by the Metropolitan Police in securing the area. The response was swift and efficient, ensuring public safety was maintained.

The crane, owned by Falcon Cranes, became the center of attention as efforts began to safely remove it from the site. This task falls under the responsibility of contractor Durkan, who is working in tandem with developer Sovereign Network Group (SNG). SNG has openly acknowledged the incident, confirming the lack of injuries and minor property damage. They emphasised their commitment to safety and the ongoing investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Falcon Cranes, the crane owner, has a history that is now under scrutiny. Just six weeks prior, another of their cranes collapsed in Edinburgh, resulting in injuries. Furthermore, the company is slated to appear in court over a 2017 incident where a crane collapse led to tragic fatalities.

The incident has prompted a full investigation by the Health and Safety Executive, which will thoroughly examine both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse. It is a stark reminder of the inherent risks in construction and the crucial need for stringent safety measures.

The development project at Central Middlesex Hospital is a significant one, comprising 158 affordable homes spread across four residential buildings. The project aims to contribute to the regeneration of the area around Old Oak Common station, with Durkan at the helm of construction, scheduled for completion in 2024.
